MLF and Manchester City Library are delighted to present the acclaimed literary biographer, Lyndall Gordon, who will be discussing her latest book, Lives Like Loaded Guns: Emily Dickinson and Her Family's Feuds. One of America's best-loved poets, Emily Dickinson published only ten poems during her lifetime, but 1,800 were discovered after her death, many of them hidden in a locked chest. She has often been portrayed as an odd and pathetic woman, disappointed in love, but Lyndall’s new book recasts her as a mystic and lover whose family harboured a hothouse drama of sex, scandal and devastating betrayal. MLF and Manchester City Library are delighted to present two of the region's most promising poets, Andrew Forster and Rebecca Goss, both published by independent press Flambard. Andrew Forster's first collection Fear of Thunder was shortlisted for the Forward Prize for Best First Collection in 2008. His new collection Territory delves into the landscape, history and natural history of Leadhills, exploring the uneasy balance of our relationship with nature. Rebecca Goss, author of the well-received pamphlet Keeping Houston Time, launches her first full-length collection The Anatomy of Structures.

 

Over summer 2010 the BUGGED project encouraged writers to eavesdrop in public places, and write using what they overheard. The project brought together famous names and brand new writers in a lively online community that celebrated gossip and creativity. The resulting anthology showcases the best and brightest writing from across the UK, all based on this single happening.
